Gimme Five!

Skylab Orbital Station
The Memoir and Backstory Blog Challenge continues...

Gimme Five!

I'm really into NASA news stories. They make rockets! Since there are no more moon missions, my latest fascination is Skylab. It's launched into orbit with one of the old Saturn rockets and houses an entire science lab. How cool is that?! A house is orbit. Someday I want to go there. Without knowing it, this is a excellent foreshadowing of my attraction to sci-fi.

The President of the United States, who I don't really know, quits and his Vice President becomes President. Ford seems old. Sometimes nice and sometimes stern. I really don't know what to make of him, but I think he wants to do a good job.

The Great Discovery
Around this time I become terribly interested in girls. My first crush is a neighbor girl who lives just around the corner. I proposed marriage, but the engagement only lasts two months. Truth be told, I end up being a little Casanova as I walk all the girls home from school or church. Along the way I pick them dandelions and buttercups, occasionally pilfering plums from shrubberies.

Susan, Gina, Lydia, Heidi... they are all just too cute to resist. I even brake my finger pretending to rescue them from bad guys. I play it cool when I walk home to Mom. As it turns out... the ground is hard and you should pull your punches if you're going to hit it.

  1. I actually wrote a letter to President Ford after Nixon resigned, wishing him luck. I was 11, but my parents were consumed with Watergate and watched a lot of TV about it and, at the time, I felt bad for Nixon and then Ford, for stepping into such a mess.

Love your youthful gallantry! Too adorable. One of my five-year-old "boyfriends" used to crawl around on all fours as if he was a wild animal and I'd ride on his back. Did you ever do that for a girl?

    1. Ha! Actually I would. Anything to make them smile. ;)

  2. How funny, a little cassanova. I was a tomboy at 5, so little boys were just pals to me. This was charming to read. Little boys are so different from girls. Imagine being interested in rockets? I love SF too, but I was introduced to it be tales of ESP and interesting aliens.

    1. NASA was really busy around that time. The moon missions were just finishing and they started sending out probes into the solar system. Even now I love seeing the new photos from Mars.
